Article: How to Layer Knitwear Without Looking Bulky

How to Layer Knitwear Without Looking Bulky

Australian weather rarely stays the same all day. A cool morning can turn warm by lunchtime, only for the temperature to drop again later.

That is where good knitwear earns its place. Rather than piling on heavier pieces, start with a light base and build warmth gradually. The right combination should feel comfortable when worn together, but easy to adjust as the day changes.

Start With a Lightweight Base

The first layer sets the foundation for everything that follows.

A cotton tee or shirt gives you a comfortable base without adding unnecessary weight. It can also be worn on its own when the day warms up. A small section of the neckline or cuff at the wrist can add definition without making the outfit feel overworked.

The Dotty Tee works particularly well here. Its simple shape makes it easy to layer beneath a fine knit, while its relaxed feel keeps the outfit comfortable. Pair it with straight-leg denim and a lightweight merino knit for an easy combination that works from a cool morning through to a warmer afternoon.

Fit matters, too, but your base doesn't need to be fitted. Choose a shape that feels comfortable and gives you enough room to layer without feeling restricted.

Choose a Fine Knit

When you need another layer, a fine knit is often more practical than a heavy jumper.

Fine merino provides warmth without the weight of a chunky knit, leaving room for a shirt underneath or a jacket over the top. It works just as easily with tailored trousers as it does with denim, so one knit can suit several occasions.

The Sam Knit in Fine Merino is made from 100% extra fine merino and has a close fit that works well for layering. Wear it over a shirt with tailored trousers for work or dinner, or keep it casual with denim.

Keep the layers underneath simple. A shirt collar sitting naturally above the neckline and a small section of cuff at the wrist is often all you need.

Don't Be Afraid to Keep It Relaxed

Layering doesn't always have to mean keeping every piece close to the body. Relaxed shapes can work beautifully together, particularly when you want an easy, comfortable look.

Try layering a fine knit over a relaxed tee or shirt, then add your favourite denim or wider-leg trousers. If you prefer a little more room, don't be afraid to size up. The extra ease can make a layered outfit feel more relaxed and effortless.

The key is to choose pieces that feel comfortable together and suit the way you actually like to dress. There is no need to make every layer fitted or structured.

Try a Vest Instead

If you've been following Vic & Bert for a while, you'll know just how much we love vests. They are one of our favourite ways to add another layer without making an outfit feel heavy.

A second jumper is not always the answer when you need a little more warmth.

The Rudy fine merino Vest adds warmth through the body without adding another layer across the arms. Made from 100% fine merino, it has a clean silhouette and slight cap sleeve that works over a tee or shirt and can also sit beneath a jacket.

For the weekend, wear it with a simple tee and denim. With a shirt and tailored trousers, it takes on a more polished feel.

It is a particularly useful layer on days when you want a little more warmth without adding another heavy piece.

And if you're a fellow vest fan, keep an eye out — we have some new vest styles coming for spring/summer.

Keep Colour and Texture Simple

Your layers do not need to match exactly. They simply need to sit comfortably together.

Navy, grey, camel and bone are easy to combine with denim and tailored pieces. Keeping the colours within a similar palette creates a quieter look, while one contrasting shade can add definition without taking over the outfit.

Texture can work in much the same way. If the knit already has plenty of texture, keep the layers underneath relatively clean. A smooth merino knit gives you more room to introduce texture through denim, a shirt or a jacket.

Not every layer needs to stand out. The most considered combinations often work because the individual pieces complement one another rather than compete for attention.

Four Ways to Wear the Same Pieces

You can take the same few layers through different parts of the week simply by changing what you wear them with.

Everyday: Wear the Dotty Tee with straight-leg denim. Add a fine knit for the cooler part of the morning and remove it when the day warms up.

For work: Layer the Sam Knit in Fine Merino over a shirt with tailored trousers. Add a structured jacket for a more polished finish.

For the weekend: Pair the Rudy fine merino Vest with a tee and denim. It adds warmth while keeping the outfit relaxed.

For the evening: Keep the same base and knit you have worn during the day, then add a jacket as the evening cools. A small change can be enough to take the outfit from day to night.

Choose Pieces You Will Keep Wearing

Before buying another knit, look at the pieces already hanging in your wardrobe.

The denim you wear every week, your favourite shirts and a pair of tailored trousers can all become starting points for different outfits. A knit that works with several of them will naturally earn more wear than one that only suits a particular combination.

That is where pieces such as the Dotty Tee, Sam Knit and Rudy Vest make sense. Each can be styled in different ways without requiring a completely different wardrobe around it.

A considered wardrobe is not necessarily a large one. It is made up of pieces you know you will reach for, season after season.

Dress for the Day Ahead

Good layering is not about adding more clothes. It is about knowing which pieces will work when the weather shifts.

Start with a light base, add a fine knit when you need warmth, and bring in a vest or jacket when you want another layer. When everything fits comfortably and works with the rest of your wardrobe, dressing for the day becomes much simpler.

The most useful knitwear is often the piece you keep reaching for. It works with what you already own, adapts to changing weather and continues to make sense season after season.
